Il fiume Timavo, dopo un lungo percorso sotterraneo, riemerge a San Giovanni di Duino in una cornice naturalistica di rara bellezza. A pochi chilometri dal mar Adriatico, le sue acque sgorgano da quattro polle che fanno da sfondo a siti di marcata valenza storica. La particolarità di presentare un corso ipogeo suscitò suggestione sin dai tempi antichi, venendo citato –tra gli altri– anche da Virgilio, nell’Eneide.

After flowing for about 40 km underground, the Timavo river re-emerges in San Giovanni di Duino in a natural setting of rare beauty. A few kilometers from the sea, the water of the river gushes out from four pools of water or springs which form the backdrop for sites of historical value. The peculiarity of this underground river has impressed people since ancient times and is also mentioned in Virgil’s Aeneid.
